What Double Glazed uPVC Windows Actually Do

If you live near a busy road in Rawalpindi, or your west-facing rooms turn into ovens every Islamabad summer, you have probably heard that double glazed uPVC windows are the answer. But what does double glazing actually do, how much difference does it really make, and what should you expect to pay for it in Pakistan?

Double glazing means two panes of glass sealed into a single unit with a gap between them. That gap, usually filled with air or an inert gas, is what does the work. It slows heat transfer and dampens sound waves far more effectively than a single pane ever could.

BPC Company supplies and installs double-glazed uPVC window systems (Yagmurpen Turkish and Zhongcai Chinese profiles) from our Islamabad branch at Plaza 54, MB Commercial, DHA Phase 2, and our Swat branch near 3 Friends CNG Pump, G.T. Road, Qamber, Mingora. This guide explains double glazing in plain terms so you can decide where it is worth the investment in your home.

How Double Glazing Works

A double-glazed unit (often called an IGU, or insulated glass unit) consists of two glass panes separated by a spacer bar, sealed around the edges to create an airtight cavity. The cavity is typically 6mm to 20mm wide. Wider gaps generally insulate better, up to a point.

Heat moves through glass in three ways: conduction (direct transfer through the material), convection (air currents in the gap), and radiation. The sealed air gap disrupts all three. Air is a poor conductor of heat, so the gap acts as an insulating barrier. Some premium units fill the gap with argon gas, which insulates slightly better than air, though the difference is modest in Pakistan’s climate.

For sound, the principle is different. Sound travels as vibration. Two panes of glass with an air gap between them force sound waves to cross three boundaries (glass, air, glass), losing energy at each one. Using two panes of different thicknesses improves performance further, because each thickness blocks different sound frequencies.

The Real Benefits for Pakistani Homes

Noise Reduction

This is the benefit most buyers notice first. If your bedroom faces a main road, double glazing can meaningfully reduce traffic noise. It will not make a busy street silent, no supplier should promise that, but the difference between single and double glazed is immediately noticeable. For homes in DHA Islamabad, Bahria Town, or along G.T. Road in Mingora, this alone often justifies the upgrade for bedrooms.

Heat Insulation

Pakistan’s summers are brutal on west and south-facing rooms. Double glazing slows heat entering through the glass, which means your air conditioner works less hard. Over several summers, the energy saving is real, though we do not claim specific figures because every home’s orientation, shading, and usage patterns differ.

Reduced Condensation

In winter, single glass gets cold enough for indoor moisture to condense on it, leaving water on sills and encouraging mold. Double glazing keeps the inner pane warmer, which significantly reduces condensation. This matters in Islamabad’s cold, damp winters and in Swat’s longer cold season.

Security

Two panes are harder to break through than one. Combined with the multi-point locking hardware standard on quality uPVC windows, double glazing adds a genuine layer of security.

Property Value

Well-specified double-glazed uPVC windows are a visible upgrade that buyers and tenants recognize. For rental properties in Islamabad’s competitive market, they are a differentiator.

What Double Glazing Cannot Do

Honesty matters here. Double glazing is excellent, but it has limits:

  • It reduces noise significantly but does not eliminate it. Low-frequency sounds (heavy truck engines, bass) are the hardest to block.
  • It improves insulation but does not replace proper wall insulation or shading. A west-facing room with no shade will still get hot.
  • The uPVC frame itself must be good quality. Double glazing in a poorly sealed frame with cheap gaskets wastes the investment.
  • Very cheap “double glazing” with narrow gaps and poor sealing performs little better than single glass. The unit must be properly manufactured.

Single vs Double Glazing: Where Each Makes Sense

Not every window in your home needs double glazing. Here is how we typically advise clients:

Double glazing recommended: bedrooms (especially street-facing), living rooms on busy roads, west and south-facing rooms with high sun exposure, home offices where concentration matters, nurseries.

Single glazing adequate: store rooms, bathrooms with small ventilators, interior-facing windows in quiet locations, budget rental properties where the priority is basic functionality.

A good supplier will go room by room with you rather than quoting double glazing for every opening. That is what BPC does during our free site measurement.

Cost Factors for Double Glazed uPVC Windows in Pakistan

BPC does not publish fixed prices because every project differs. But these are the factors that determine what you will pay:

Glass specification. Standard double-glazed units cost more than single glass. Thicker glass, wider air gaps, and low-E coatings (which reflect heat) each add to the cost. Toughened or laminated glass for security adds more.

Window size. Larger units use more glass and heavier frames. Very large fixed panels may need thicker glass for structural reasons.

Profile system. Yagmurpen Turkish profiles cost more than Zhongcai Chinese systems. Both can carry double glazing, but the overall system cost differs.

Opening type. The glazing cost is similar across opening types, but the frame and hardware costs vary. A double-glazed tilt-and-turn window costs more than a double-glazed fixed window of the same size.

Quantity. Larger projects often achieve better per-window pricing because measurement, fabrication setup, and installation mobilization are spread across more units.

Getting Double Glazing Right: What to Ask Suppliers

  • What is the air gap width in your double-glazed units?
  • Is the glass toughened, laminated, or standard float?
  • Are the units manufactured locally or imported?
  • What gaskets and seals are used around the glass?
  • Is the same hardware used as in your single-glazed quotes, or is it upgraded?
  • Can I see a sample unit before committing?

If a supplier cannot answer these, they may be outsourcing the glazing to a third party without quality control. BPC works with established glass unit suppliers and verifies every unit before installation.

FAQs

Is double glazing worth it in Pakistan? For bedrooms facing roads, west-facing rooms, and homes where air-conditioning costs are high, yes. The noise reduction alone is noticeable from day one. For quiet, shaded, or utility spaces, single glazing is often sufficient.

How much more does double glazing cost than single glass? Double-glazed units cost proportionally more than single glass, with the exact difference depending on glass thickness, air gap, and any coatings. BPC provides itemized quotes so you can see the difference for your specific windows.

Does double glazing make rooms completely soundproof? No. It significantly reduces noise, especially mid and high-frequency sounds like traffic and voices, but it does not eliminate all sound. Be cautious of any supplier promising complete silence.

What is the air gap in BPC’s double-glazed units? Our units typically use a cavity between 6mm and 20mm wide, depending on the window specification. The exact gap for your windows will be listed in your written quotation.

Can existing single-glazed uPVC windows be upgraded to double glazing? Sometimes, depending on the frame depth and profile system. The frame must be deep enough to accept the thicker unit. BPC can assess your existing windows during a site visit.

Does double glazing help in winter too? Yes. It keeps warm air inside during Islamabad and Swat winters, reducing heating needs and preventing condensation on the glass.

How long do double-glazed units last? A properly manufactured and installed unit should last many years. The main failure mode is seal breakdown, which causes fogging between the panes. Quality manufacturing and installation minimize this risk.
